Elos de permanência: o lazer como preservação da memória coletiva dos libertos e de seus descendentes em Juiz de Fora no início do século XX

Abstract

The current research analyzes the freed slaves and their descendants’ insertion in the city of Juiz de Fora in the beginning of the 20th century, through the informal places of sociability – like bars, slums joints, nightclubs and fairs. Due to the absence of other more formal partnerships, such as associations or political parties, it was in the daily leisure that the black people (African American) strengthened their family and community ties. In the celebration environment, the tensions were smoothened, allowing an approximation among the several social groups which composed the society from Juiz de Fora at that period. The cultural codes were shared and meaningful symbolic exchanges were established and this is what is going to be analyzed along the research.
