Das fotografias às memórias: a Secretaria de Educação de Juiz de Fora e os fragmentos da educação municipal (1967-1974)

Abstract

From the perspective that photographs are visual narratives, covered by knowledge/power relationships, and that they touch the subjectivities, the present dissertation aims at investigating part of the photographs forming the historical inventory of Juiz de Fora Education Secretariat, based on the following questions: What do these images allow us to say about education and its subjects between 1967 and 1974? The herein proposed time frame comprises the time prior to the creation of this governmental bureau – in 1969 – and goes all the way up to the second administration by Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco as Juiz de Fora mayor. Inspired by the post-critical research theories in education, this study does not expect to consolidate a totalizing and ultimate knowledge about the possibilities the research images set, but, to promote displacements among feasibilities by setting convergence and/or dispersion points, and by problematizing their meanings, uses and likely readings. By using the theoretical assumptions that rise from studies of memoires and of Visual Culture, photographs are taken as discontinuous discourses entangled by singular productions crossed by intentions and senses; they cross the institutions, the discursive practices, the power networks and the political regime of truth. Photographs used in the current research act in an education process of the sight because it is ‘instrumentalized’ by the constitution of a past that tells about the educational practices in this municipality, as well as amplifies the sense of education to spheres beyond events in school institutions, by taking into account the images that tell about education processes that encompass subjects and activate an education tangent to images.
