Abstract

The present work aims to demonstrate how philosophy and art are related in ways that go far beyond the simple analysis/object relationship. Philosophy can inspire and sustain artistic production, just as art can be a manifestation of philosophy through the sensitive. In this context, the event of the birth of Gothic in St. Denis presents himself as our ideal study subject. The ideas of theophany, ineffability of the Principle and metaphysics of Light. developed in the philosophy. inspire and manifest themselves through the Gothic. To demonstrate our thesis, we will seek to understand in depth this philosophical basis using the five books of Periphyseon, by John Scotus Eriugena, and the works of the Corpus Dionysiacum, by Dionysius the Areopagite, we will also use the reports left by Suger and other works from the most diverse fields of knowledge that are related to the issue (philosophy, arts, architecture and history). We will analyze the Gothic, demonstrating how these concepts are manifested in art not as mere coincidence, but as a foundation. The relationship between the stained grass and light as a manifestation of the Principle will be the key point in understanding this relationship between art and philosophy. In this way, we seek to build a solid demonstration of how the Gothic as we know it is only possible on the basis of its philosophy inspiration.
