Fronteiras e abismos: a ficção realista em Jimmy Corrigan

Abstract

This text proposes a study of the realistic aesthetics in the comic book Jimmy Corrigan: o menino mais esperto do mundo (2009), by the American author Chris Ware. This dissertation is based on a thorough and interested look, an analysis of the aesthetic choices that characterize Ware’s comic book. The work can be read in two central questions along the text: one dealing with a better understanding of the concepts, discussions and perceptions around the term “realism” in comic books and their unfolding within the narrative processes. The other question seeks to understand how Chris Ware's comic book establishes itself as realistic fiction. In this sense, I resorted to theorists who discuss narrative and its realistic manifestations; texts about the history and language of comic books, as well as those dedicated to Chris Ware's work and creative processes. Several comic book narratives by American authors, as well as some Canadian ones, are also brought to the text, due to the aesthetic dialogue of these publications with Ware's work.
