O processo de institucionalização da coleção de artes plásticas do poeta Murilo Mendes

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the institutionalization process of the fine arts collection that belonged to the poet Murilo Mendes (1901-1975) by the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, in 1994, with a view to the creation of the Murilo Mendes Study Center ( CEMM). The genesis of this process refers to the donation of the poet's private library to UFJF in 1977, by Maria da Saudade Cortesão Mendes, widow of Murilo Mendes. From the 1980s, professors in the areas of Humanities, Letters, and Arts of UFJF began research related to the life and work of the poet. Such research culminated with the discovery of the collection and the desire to bring it to Brazil. In 1993, the Brazilian Government, in a favorable political environment, in negotiation with Maria da Saudade, celebrated the Term of Contract for Transfer of the art collection of Murilo Mendes to Brazil. The following year, the collection was transferred to Juiz de Fora, the hometown of Mendes, where the inauguration of the CEMM, linked to the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), was inaugurated. In order to understand the theme, this dissertation identifies the actions, characters and institutional agents involved in the transfer of the collection to Brazil, as well as examining the actions of CEMM, considering the preservation of the memory of the poet Murilo Mendes
