O uso da ultrassonografia na Odontologia: revisão discutida

Abstract

Ultrasonography (USG) is an imaging technique based on the propagation and reflection of sound waves in tissues. This technique is radiation-free, painless, inexpensive, allows real-time imaging, and is a reference standard in soft tissue evaluation. Despite being a promising technique, in Dentistry it is still underestimated and underutilized by dentists. This work is a literature review, in which scientific works previously available on this imaging method were surveyed, focusing on its use in Dentistry. The objective was to carry out a discussed literature review, in order to synthesize the academic knowledge produced about the use of USG in Dentistry. It can be concluded that USG is an effective technique in Dentistry, capable of replacing other imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and panoramic radiography. Furthermore, it has application in the dentomaxillofacial region to examine soft tissue; facial space injury; temporomandibular joint (TMJ); assess muscles; assess and discover changes in salivary glands and deal with aesthetic fillers. It is hoped that this work will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about USG among dentists.
