Do alento à perdição: João Goulart entre o triunfo do presidencialismo e o drama da deposição

Abstract

The victory of PTB and João Goulart in the presidential plebiscite of 1963 created favorable expectations for the end of the socioeconomic crisis that the country was going through. The possibility of improving the economy with the change of regime was the hope projected by the popular and parliamentarians for better times. However, the scenario that seemed favorable to the government did not correspond to the demands coming from the streets and from Congress. As a result, the expectations turned into frustrations, which was amplified by the increase in the political crisis against the president and his party composition. The lack of understanding between João Goulart and his former PSD allies, such as disputes between PTB leaders, especially between Leonel Brizola and João Goulart, in addition to the response action against the government's political agenda, mainly in the proposals around Agrarian Reform, create a state of rivalry between the executive and the legislature that ended with the deposition of the president in a military coup in April 1964.
