Negociação de sentido e exercícios de poder no documentário: o caso de Os dias com ele

Abstract

This dissertation aims to verify the degree of correlation of forces contained in the possible power relations existing between characters and directors during the production process. We assume that the relationships between these parts are asymmetrical to the extent that the director has the advantage of the entire film apparatus at his disposal and is able to manipulate how the information provided by his interviewees will be displayed and received by viewers, especially by account of the film editing process. In order to investigate this issue, we conducted a case study from the in-depth examination of the documentary “The Days with Him,” directed by Maria Clara Escobar (2013). We also proceeded with a bibliographical revision with the retrospective in the history of the documentary tradition in the cinema, verifying in what way the voices of the others were used, from the 1960s until the present day. Finally, we have seen how the power relations occur in this documentary from its uniqueness determined by the multiple dimensions of relationship that bind director and protagonist, carrying with it both structural determinations of social power relations and singular determinations of parental relationship. puts the film in a place of complex and contradictory analysis.
