Entre trâmites políticos e conflitos sociais: a memória do Contestado Mineiro-capixaba

Abstract

The dissertation analyzes the territorial conflict for the dispute and annexation of the disputed territory, called the contested zone, between the boundaries of the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, in the region between the Vale do Rio Doce in Minas Gerais and the Northwest / Santo, during the years of 1937 to 1963. In 1937 from the new Constitution, states became responsible for demarcating their boundaries. It was observed that the greater jurisdictional dominance represented by the bureaucratic machine of the states would count as a legal act to demarcate the limits. The year 1963 marks the signing of the "Treaty of Peace", the end of disputes between the two states. The central issue addressed in this investigation is to understand how the population of a litigious area experiences the implications caused by state disinterest. In this sense, our answers were obtained through documental analysis and oral narratives. At first we observe the historical importance of this region, where we have as a result, the mapping of the main conflicts. In a second moment we tried to problematize what were the motivations that led to the emergence of the contested zone and the derivatives that emerge from a disputed territory. As a result, we perceive that advantage in these areas relapses on the dominant elites in the preservation of their interest, be they political or economic. Finally, we seek the light of memory articulating with other sources, to verify which are the inconveniences and constraints that impact the social agents inserted in an area of jurisdictional indefinition. The final outcome was to understand the strategies used by the social agents of a litigious area.
