Abstract

This study analyses the tradition and the representation like structures inherent to the first Vatican Council. This Council emerges as the culmination of numerous attempts of the Church in the 19th century (especially during the pontificate of Pius IX) to reassert your authority and circumscribe the right to the Catholic faith, and emphasizing with its canons reminiscing about the fundamentals of the tradition and the representation from the formulations about the infallibility of the Church and the Pope, the apostolic succession and the primacy of the Pope and Rome and the expression of truth in the Catholic faith. Starting from tradition and representation as categories of analysis, the notions of authority, continuity and truth makes a self-understanding or perspective of history herself concocted by Church in general councils whose construction culminate with the First Vatican Council. Thus, points out that from this Council, the concept of tradition gained greater importance, assuming the central perspective for auto scrolling of the Church within the story.
