O papel da moda nos escritos de Júlia Lopes de Almeida

Abstract

This current thesis deploys a reflection on the writing of Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862- 1934), author with great literary productivity. It investigates the implications of her literary work that inserts aspects of the field of fashion into the text. In this sense, we shall attempt to understand the importance of her reports on the clothing in the representation of her characters and the construction of their personalities, as well as in the representation of the utter society from that time. By doing this, we understand that it will be possible to shed light on the critical position of the author in relation to the condition of the women of her time. It shall shed light on the construction of the female characters in novels and chronicles. The historical cut of the research is concentrated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a period in which the rise of the Brazilian bourgeoisie and the need for high society to impose their social condition will compose categories of analysis rescued from the literary text in question. The present research also aims to discuss how fashion and literature, while distinct fields of knowledge, may dialogue.
