Abstract

The study of practice and nineteenth-century photographic experience allows us to unveil aspects of social dynamics, since the photo hints at the layers of historical time. The PMM photo collection, one of the first museums in Brazil, although extremely representative of collecting photographs of the second half of the nineteenth century, is a set of documents understudied. The objective of this research is to analyze the process of formation of the collection, characterizing it, identifying the major formats, techniques, themes and photographers present in this set of documents. It also aims to understand their new meanings over time, the private collection of Families Ferreira Lage and Cavalcanti to turn into public collections, as well as forms of agency of these images by the institution. As part of the task of tracing a cultural biography of the collection, it is essential to review the relevance of photography and other objects as building strategy and maintenance of sociability networks woven by the families of the imperial elite in eight.
