| Abstract: | This study investigates how masculinist groups that identify as “redpill” attribute meanings to relational dynamics between men and women in contemporary Brazil. It draws on the concepts of “hegemonic masculinity,” “subordinate masculinities,” and “protest masculinities” developed by Raewyn Connell to explore the particular ways in which redpill networks construct meanings about what it means to “be a man” in response to experiences such as betrayal and rejection. Accordingly, the research contributes a qualitative digital field study of the Facebook group “Redpill Brasil,” the Instagram page “Movimento_Red_Pill,” and a WhatsApp group. These interactions on social media are compared with interviews given by three public figures who consider themselves part of redpill networks: Thiago Schutz, “Esqueleto” MGTOW, and Silas Souza. The aim is to show how different interpretations of what it means to “be a single man” are transformed into identity subcategories such as pickup artist, MGTOW, and incel. Through a contextualist approach within the anthropology of emotions, the research combines digital ethnography with Foucauldian discourse analysis in order to understand the specific ways in which redpill networks produce feelings of anger, humiliation, and frustration in subaltern contexts such as Brazil. |
