Análise dos efeitos esqueléticos e dentários da expansão rápida da maxila e o impacto na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal: relato de caso

Abstract

Transverse maxillary deficiencies lead to different clinical manifestations, such as: maxillary hypoplasia, asymmetrical facial growth, positioning and functional deviations of the mandible, altered dentofacial aesthetics, adverse periodontal conditions, unstable dental inclinations and other functional problems. In addition to functional problems, this change can cause aesthetic problems that compromise the quality of life related to oral health. Although this deformity is considered one of the skeletal problems that can cause the most sequelae in the nasomaxillary complex, on the other hand, it is also the one that best responds to orthopedic changes among all other regions of the craniofacial complex. Rapid maxillary expansion (ERM), a therapy that uses orthopedic forces to open the palatal suture, is the practice commonly used in the treatment of these deformities. Results of greater magnitude and skeletal stability can be obtained when ERM is performed before the pubertal growth peak, and if performed after the pubertal growth peak, transverse changes occur at the dento-alveolar level. Considering that early diagnosis and adequate treatment of developmental changes are essential for the preservation of occlusion, aesthetics, phonetics and psychological and emotional well-being of the individual, the objective of this work will be to report a clinical case involving the correction of transverse maxillary deficiency with ERM, analysis of skeletal and dental results and the application of a questionnaire to assess the impact on quality of life related to oral health before and after the use of said orthodontic therapy.
