A casa da memória nacional entre a ditadura e a democracia: o IHGB nos anos de 1980 a 2016

Abstract

This research aims to understand the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (IHGB) between the end of the dictatorship and the 2016 coup. To this end, we seek to investigate the institution from 1980 to 2016 with the aim of inserting the research object into the current historiographical debate on the memories constructed regarding the dictatorship in the context of transition, consolidation and the beginning of the new crisis of democracy in the country. Thus, the investigation is focused, on the one hand, on the institutional composition, and on the other, on the discourses propagated by the institution regarding the authoritarian regime inaugurated with the 1964 coup. Thus, first a profile will be presented of the partners who held positions in the administration of IHGB over these years. Then, in dialogue with historiography, narratives located in communications, debates and conferences at the institution's meetings and in texts published in the Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (RIHGB) related to the dictatorship will be addressed. These two fronts of investigation will allow us to trace a collective biography of those individuals who dictated the institution's direction and, at the same time, understand how the Institute related to the dictatorship's past at different times. Therefore, minutes of sessions and articles from RIHGB are used as main sources.
