As batalhas através dos periódicos: a guerra contra o Paraguai e as trajetórias de Henrique Fleiuss e Angelo Agostini na imprensa entre 1864-1870

Abstract

The war against Paraguay, which took place between 1864 and 1870, had a series of developments, not only in Brazilian history, but also in the specific region such as the Southern Cone. And one of these developments was referred to the illustrated press of the time, which aimed to narrate the events that took place in the South, but in a visual way, changing the spectators' relationship with the images. Thus, artists such as Henrique Fleiuss and Angelo Agostini were essential for the dissemination of visual culture in the country, emphasizing examples from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Therefore, the objective of this research is to analyze the trajectories of both artists during the conflict period, as well as their visual productions, this being a way of understanding their different perspectives and positions throughout the war on issues such as the Empire, conscription military and the confrontation itself. Furthermore, the main moments covered by both newspapers will be presented, which will be presented with primary sources and the historiography about the conflict and the artists themselves, seeking to interpret the events and the different perspectives imposed by them.
