A odontologia hospitalar e sua importância na multidisciplinaridade: uma revisão discutida da literatura

Abstract

The performance of the dental surgeon in the area of hospital dentistry is presented as an achievement structured throughout history in the world and in Brazil. The impact on the recovery of the hospitalized patient's quality of life demonstrates the need to warrant dental care in a hospital environment. The dental surgeon is the professional responsible for carrying out adequate control of infections that reach the stomatognathic system, reducing health risks and the aggravation of systemic conditions that compromise the general condition of the patient. In this sense, discussed review of the literature sought to highlight the importance of the role of the dental surgeon in multidisciplinary teams at the hospital level, with emphasis on follow-up in Intensive Care Units. Based on the analysis of scientific articles from the Google Academy, Scielo, BIREME, PubMed and Scopus databases, published since 1965, with the aim of detailing the history and evolution of hospital dentistry, in accordance with current laws and regulations that guarantee its operation and its impact on the health care of hospitalized patients through the definition of care and oral health promotion protocols. Therefore, it is concluded that dentistry used at the hospital level is one of the premises of the new DCNs (National Curriculum Guidelines) for the Dentistry course, and must contemplate the current health system as a way of allowing the patient to receive comprehensive and humanized care and follow-up.
