Linguagem e significação em Aristóteles e Wittgenstein

Abstract

Through the analysis and comparison between Aristotle's and Wittgenstein's works, this thesis aims to understand how the two philosophers address some issues related to Language and Meaning. Therefore, this research adopted as its main focus the works De Interpretatione and Philosophical Investigations, resorting, when needed, to other writings of the aforementioned authors. At first, the research sought to verify whether there was any mention of Aristotelian writings in the Austrian philosopher's work. Once these citations were found, even if indirectly, we set out to analyze whether Wittgenstein's criticisms, undertaken against the entire philosophical tradition, would apply to the way in which Aristotle establishes his reflections on language and meaning. In light of this scenario, this doctoral dissertation specifically intends to understand and assess whether there is, in the Aristotelian writings, some remnant of what is usually called referentialism and representationalism theories of meaning. The purpose of this analysis is to verify whether these discussions, in the way they are developed by the two philosophers, can contribute to the studies carried out in the areas of Linguistics and Language Sciences.
