Erotismo e imagens religiosas nas obras de Matheus de Simone e Antônio Obá: uma abordagem dos símbolos a partir de Carl Gustav Jung

Abstract

The combination of elements of eroticism with Christian religious symbols is recurrent in the art of imagery made in the Catholic West, with different reactions from the public. In the Brazilian art of the last decade, this combination of elements caused virulent reactions on the part of the faithful and religious leaders, under the allegation of “vilification of an object of worship”. The present thesis seeks an understanding of this phenomenon from the idea of enantiodromy, used by Carl Gustav Jung to analyze the development of the central symbols of Christianity in recent centuries. The unilateral fixation on the purely spiritual aspect of the archetype causes a movement of symbolic compensation, expressed through art, with the incorporation of sensual elements to the ascetic and traditional dogmatic image. This process would therefore imply an update of the symbol. In this perspective, through jungian interpretation methods, some images of strongly symbolic appeal will be analyzed, present in the works of two contemporary Brazilian artists: Matheus de Simone and Antônio Obá.
