Abstract: This Master’s dissertation integrates the macroproject “Portuguese language teaching: from faculty formation to the classroom” (FAPEMIG CHE-APQ-01864-12), coordinated by the Professor Neusa Salim Miranda and linked to the line of research “Linguistics and language teaching” from the UFJF Linguistics Post-Graduation Program. The main goal of this macroproject is to investigate the practices of success or failure in the teaching of mother tongue. This dissertational work aims to contribute to this discussion from the study of successful practices in Portuguese Language teaching based on the teacher’s viewpoint. The scenario which was investigated is composed by fifteen mother tongue teachers from eight state schools located in Muriaé/MG. This research has selected the case method (YIN, 2001) in a mixed approach as methodology, adopting quantitative and qualitative analytical procedures (MASON, 2006). Theoretical choices are concentrated on the contributions of Cognitive Linguistics (LAKOFF, 1987; FELDMAN, 2006; GEERAERS & CUYCKENS, 2007; CROFT & CRUSE, 2004; SALOMÃO, 2012) and on its main semantic model: Frames Semantics (FILLMORE, 1971, 1982, 1895, 2007; RUPPENHOFER et al, 2010; SALOMÃO, 2009; MOREIRA & SALOMÃO, 2012). From this model, derives the lexicographical platform FrameNet (www.framenet.icsi.berkeley.edu), crucial for the methodological basis of this research. Since this is a hybrid project – Linguistics and Education -, contributions arising from different scientific fields are of paramount importance to support a consistent hermeneutic exercise on data. Thus, we have made use of Sociology (BAUMAN, 2007, 2008; SOUZA, 2011; FREITAS, 2011), Education (PRAIRAT, 2011; LIBÂNEO, 2002; BIRGIN, s/d), of Tomasello’s cognitive Anthropology (2003), of Applied Linguistics (MIRANDA, 2005), of the Theory of Genres (BAKHTIN, 1997; DOLZ, SCHNEUWLY & NOVERRAZ, 2004; MACHADO & CRISÓVÃO, 2006) and of the Theories of Literacy (STREET, 1997, 2003, 2007; SOARES, 2004; TFOUNI, 1995). The data analysis was developed from the concept of frame, which allowed us to safely identify the perspectives brought by the teacher discourse. In these terms, we were able to build two networks of frames: i) frames about the practices of success – Technology_Use (29.4%), Occasional_Technology_Use (41.2%) and Project_Use (29.4%) and ii) frames about everyday practices: Text_Teaching (14 occurrences) and Grammar_Teaching (10 occurrences). We have realized that the main thread of successful practices lies on teaching authorship, on the choices (thematic and/or methodological) mostly induced mostly by the teacher themselves. These successful practices are also constituted of a break with already worn out models. While everyday practices are marked by the repetition of these models, from the emergence of the study of a “systematic” grammar and from the study of texts usually based on the textbook. The results evidence ways for the overcoming of the classroom crisis currently experienced and so do refer to the need for the improvement of initial and continuing teacher education courses.
