Americanah: entre a literatura e a sociedade

Abstract

The present work aims 1to debate the central themes of the novel Americanah, written by the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, published in English in 2013. The novel reveals ordinary themes of everyday life in the current century: relationships between migrants, racism, female protagonism, tensions between north and south, and the plurality of representativeness through the construction of characters that are expressions of invisible groups. Literary and artistic productions have been opening space for new voices and new narratives, revealing epistemologies and ways of seeing the world from a different perspective from the tradition prescribed by the great Eurocentric narratives. Impelled by social movements and anti-colonial struggles, contemporary literary productions, especially African Literature, carry as their central theme the voice of a group of people who were historically forgotten. Even though the colonial presence and domination have ended, the social and political consequences are still present in the daily lives of the African population. Adichie's literary work, as a tool of social criticism and multiplication of the demands of the southern population, emerges as the liberation and emancipation of female immigrants, the black population, and the voices of the third world. The analysis of this work is one possible debate on the narrative strategies used by Adichie. The text also deals with the Historical analysis of the social impacts of migration and diasporic movements worldwide. Finally, it denounces racism, which is still present in the current century.
