Caricato gegê: representações cômicas de Getúlio Vargas nas charges da revista Careta (1929-1934)

Abstract

The main interest of the present research is to have knowledge about the discourse of Careta magazine, one of the most important illustrated publications in it‘s time, regarding Getúlio Vargas while he was at the head of the Interim Government, established after the revolutionary episodes of 1930. The primary sources of the research are editorial cartoons and caricatures published between 1929 and 1934, methodologically submitted to Documentary Method developed by Ralf Bohnsack based on Karl Mannheim‘s Sociology of Knowledge and the praxiological sociology of Pierre Bourdieu. The study intends to elucidate how the image of Vargas was built up by Careta in the early period in which the southern politician appeared in the political scene as a national exponent. In the editorial cartoons published during the determined five years, which reflect the normative habitus of Careta‘s editorial and represent it‘s world perspective, the Gegê‘s comically distorted figure presented various traits, subjected to the remarkable political instability of those times.
