Fotojornalismo de guerra: um olhar do passado sobre conflitos do presente

Abstract

This text intends to analyze a portion of Ukrainian photographer Vladyslav Krasnoshchok, who has been making the effort to photograph the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, mostly in Kharkiv (a city located in the northeast of the country). The photos taken between 2022 and 2024 show an old atmosphere, either because of the utilization of the black and white, or because of the way the images are composed, registered and treated; resulting in an effect that “dirties” the production and makes them rawer and less clear. 14 photographs were selected from a large collection called “Documentation of War”, also published on social media. To make this study possible, works from authors such as Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes, Vilém Flusser, Boris Kossoy, André Rouillé, and others, were taken into account; thus, this text leaned on an interdisciplinary approach to explain the questions surrounding Krasnoshchok's photographs and war photojournalism in general. The main objective is to understand the use of the Ukrainian's characteristic visual form, which refers to a distant past, when portraying the contemporary world, and to comprehend the implications that such aesthetics produce in the narrative and interpretive context of its readers.
