Abstract

The present thesis proposes that the work Rabelais and His World by Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin, despite being regarded as a secular text, is composed of a religious language and expresses a particular form of religion referred to as somatic materialism. Throughout the study, we first examine the scarce biographical information available about the author, along with relevant details concerning his historical context. Secondly, the thesis addresses the history of the book's composition, its characteristics, and the history of its reception in the West. Next, it offers an interpretation of the book’s content. Following this, it introduces theoretical perspectives on religious languages and the concept of somatic materialism as a framework for analysis. Finally, we identify in Bakhtin's work both the religious language that structures his text and the expression of his latent religiosity. This study highlights the significance of Ernst Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms in the development of Bakhtin’s thought. Additionally, the perspectives on religious languages and the contributions of scholars such as Craig Brandist and Caryl Emerson, among several other specialists in Bakhtinian studies, have been particularly important.
