Bichectomia: um procedimento estético-funcional

Abstract

Bichectomy is a therapeutic resource of increasing interest in the surgical head and neck area that consists in the removal of cheek fat pad, known as the Bichat Ball (BB), located between the buccinator and masseter muscles. Its utility is still discussed in the literature. The surgery has some objectives that are to improve the aesthetics of the face, improving harmony smile, as well as the reconstructive function of defects in the head and neck region. The use of imaging diagnostics, notably in ultrasound, allows that relevant information about BB's location and anatomy, as well as its relation with adjacent anatomical structures. This information makes the surgical planning of the procedures safer and predictable. This paper assess essays on surgical procedures that involve the removal of BB, including those related to diagnostic methods for the planning of bichectomy, for the purpose of evaluating changes in the patient's aesthetic and functional patterns, defining a description of their instructions, treatment and prognosis of patients undergoing this procedure.
