Da página à tela: intermidialidade na minissérie Capitu

Abstract

Produced to commemorate the centenary of the death of writer Machado de Assis, the miniseries Capitu represents an adaptation of the literary classic Dom Casmurro (1899). Written by Euclydes Marinho, directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho and shown on TV Globo in December 2008, the series brings a new reading of Machado's work that stirred up restlessness among its audience by breaking with the hegemonic naturalism of television drama at the time and mixing such different languages, such as cinema, literature, theater, dance, music, visual arts, fashion, pop culture and anachronisms between the 19th and 21st centuries. Starting from the assumption that a miniseries inaugurates a new television style, we seek to understand, from the perspective of Intermediality, how media relate to each other and what results – narrative and aesthetic – derive from such interaction. The central objective of the work consists of the search for answers to the central question of this research, which was built based on the interest in investigating the inter-idea relationship and dialogues with different artistic forms. Therefore, it was formulated as follows: Based on intermediality studies and its three forms of relationship proposed by Rajewsky (medial transposition, media combination and intermedial references), how do media relate to each other in the miniseries Capitu? The work presents a critical and detailed analysis of the Capitu miniseries, based on a survey of theoretical references on Intermediality and publications of several academic studies carried out on the miniseries. The method adopted, in turn, consists of a comparative study between the miniseries and the artistic languages identified in its composition, such as: theatrical, cinematic language, visual arts, among others. The purpose of comparative analysis is to identify the object's similarities and differences in relation to other artistic languages. Finally, the purpose of the work is to reflect on the role of TV as a democratizing vehicle for literature and the arts, in addition to contributing to the debate on Intermediality in scientific scenarios, aware that the concept has been updated according to studies in the area are move forward.
