Abstract

This study analyzes the expansion of online betting in Brazil from a Marxist theoretical perspective, investigating how this phenomenon constitutes a factor in the indebtedness and pauperization of the working class. Within the logic of contemporary capitalism, the need for survival and the expectation of social mobility are transformed into sources of accumulation. Methodologically, the research is guided by historical-dialectical materialism, adopting a qualitative approach based on bibliographic procedures and documentary analysis of recent data (2025–2026). The findings show that online betting platforms operate as a mechanism for value extraction from subordinate classes, promoting the fetish of “money that generates money.” The widespread dissemination of advertising campaigns, mediated by digital influencers, has contributed to the construction of social consensus around gambling, obscuring the structural losses experienced by bettors. It is concluded that the expansion of betting intensifies the expressions of the social question, significantly impacting public health through the increase in cases of gambling disorder and overburdening state services.
