O consumo de bebida alcoólica e direção veicular: análise multifacetada sobre a atuação do Batalhão de Polícia Militar de Trânsito no município de Campo Grande – MS

Abstract

Alcohol consumption in Brazil, although socially accepted by the vast majority of the population due to its association with hospitality and socialization, directly impacts traffic violence statistics. This study analyzes the performance of the Military Traffic Police Battalion (BPMTran) in the municipality of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, during the three-year period from 2023 to 2025. The methodology included a bibliographic review covering the last 20 years, conducted in the SciELO and Google Scholar databases, as well as a quantitative analysis of data provided by the Municipal Agency for Transportation and Traffic (AGETRAN), the State Traffic Department of Mato Grosso do Sul (DETRAN), and the Military Traffic Police Battalion (BPMTran). The results show that BPMTran acts as the main enforcement agency regarding alcohol consumption and driving, accounting for 71.7% of all notifications for refusal to take a breathalyzer test and up to 75% of arrests in flagrante delicto for drunk driving. Over the last three years, an exponential increase of 1,162.33% was also observed in notifications for refusal to take the breathalyzer test, coinciding with a 22.67% reduction in records of fatal traffic accidents during the same period. It is concluded that the visible police presence and predictive policing actions adopted by the police organization are indispensable for preserving life and ensuring traffic safety in the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul.
