O outro como o outro: traduzindo alteridades em Out of the silent planet

Abstract

The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze, through qualitative data, the representations of the constructed otherness from the contextual and linguistic strangeness of a language for fiction in the novel Out of the Silence Planet, by the Irish author C. S. Lewis, aiming to investigate the translation strategies used in the Brazilian Portuguese translations by Waldéa Barcellos (2017 [2010]), published by Martins Fontes, and by Carlos Caldas (2022 [2019]), published by Thomas Nelson Brasil. To fulfill this objective, the approach was based on the Polysystem Theory by Itamar Even-Zohar, the discussion about the concept of otherness in the context of science fiction by Pereira (2016), and the discussion about alterity in translations by Pontes Jr. & Batalha (2004). The analytical methodology applied in this paper is based on Robert K. Yin's Case Study research: design and methods (2001 [1994]) applied in Antonie Berman’s critical analysis (2013 [1985]) about deforming tendencies of translation, under the qualitative analysis perspective. This methodology led to the formulation of three categories representing otherness in the narrative: the representations of the terrestrial being (Thulcandrian), the representations of the extraterrestrial being (Malacandrian), and the representations of the Malacandrian speeches. From this analysis, it is concluded that each one of the presented translations represents qualitatively one of the translation objectives, proposed for each edition, each one modifying the source-text structure in different levels and degrees, which ones, when coherently used, also can contribute to a better understanding of the text and consequently to the immersion of the reader in the reading of the prose.
