“Non fecit taliter omni nationi”: o nacionalismo presente na devoção a Virgem de Guadalupe contada através de periódicos do México colonial (1731 – 1810)

Abstract

This reasearch aims to analyse the nationalist sentiment surrounding the devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe during the colonial period of Mexican history, aiming to examine the formation of the contry’s national identity and the designation of this symbol as an emblem that has accompanied several pivotal and complex moments in the nation’s history. Building upon the concept of criollo patriotism developed by David Branding, this research seeks to elucidate the significance of the creation of identity within its society and how demands arosed between the mid-18th and early 19th centuries initiated the formation of Mexican nationalism. By engaging issues concerning the country’s national identity, this paper proposes to understand the relevance of the devotion and its impact during the period from contemporary documents and primary sources. Additionally, it aims to adress possibles historiographical gaps concerning this period in order to bring a deeper understanding of the early stages of the national identity formation, with a focus on the Virgin of Guadalupe, regarded within Catholicism as the patroness of Mexico and the Americas.
