Abstract

In this study, we will present a comparative analysis of excerpts from two different translations of Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel One True Loves (2016), performed by OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT and Paralela’s professional translator, Alexandre Boide, respectively. Through this analysis, we aim to investigate how the machine handles contextual issues and linguistic nuances in each excerpt. From the results obtained in the analysis above, we will then propose discussions and reflections on market trends regarding Artificial Intelligence, including topics such as post-editing, regulation (on Artificial Intelligence), and the possibility of replacement of the human translator. As theoretical and methodological support, we will conduct a qualitatively oriented analysis, including the technical procedures of translation recategorized by Heloísa Barbosa (2004) and Itamar Even-Zohar’s Polysystem Theory (2013). Thus, we will analyze five fragments from both the original text and the two aforementioned translations to assess the choices made by both translators, observing, that way, the linguistic and contextual decisions made in each version. Finally, we aim to examine the market trends regarding the possibility of replacing the professional translator or integrating both of them during the translation process.
