Charges de Di Cavalcanti no Jornal A Manhã, de 1935: disfarce integralista de Plínio Salgado

Abstract

This research has as its central theme the analysis of cartoons based on the set of images illustrated by Emiliano Di Cavalcanti (1897-1976), with the pseudonym Urbano, related to the leader of the Brazilian Integralist Action (AIB), Plínio Salgado (1895-1975), made available in the newspaper A Manhã (RJ). Through the cartoons produced and published in this newspaper, against the attempt to publicize the integralist movement in 1935, the objective is to understand how Di Cavalcanti positioned himself against Plínio Salgado, mainly understanding the artist's political positioning in the selected newspaper, his struggle in relation to the regions of the country where this movement was implemented, as well as the relationship between integralism and fascism. Thus, the method used is the qualitative analysis of the selected images, whose main exponent is the sociologist Ralf Bohnsack, highlighting the interpretation of the sources, when searching for the documentary meaning, mainly based on the types of interpretative phases, called formulated and reflected. In fact, this research is justified based on the interest in the use of cartoons in academia, the occurrence of gaps in research on the policies of the integralist movement and the understanding of the influence of anti-fascism in the social context.
