Patrimônio cultural e relações internacionais: o caso da CPLP

Abstract

Heritage has occupied an increasingly prominent place in contemporary international relations, being progressively incorporated into the discourses and cultural diplomacy strategies of different countries. In light of this, language stands as the fundamental vector of heritage, not only based on the transmission of oral traditions, but also in view of the symbolic meanings built on tangible heritage. This thesis aims to analyze how the historical, linguistic, and cultural heritage (theoretically) shared by Portuguese-speaking countries has been instrumentalized in the pursuit of their foreign policy objectives. To develop this research, an analysis was carried out on the creation and development of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP, in its Portuguese acronym) and its association with the concept of Lusophony, as well as a discussion around the relationships between language, culture and heritage. Finally, we analyze the historical development of the promotion and diffusion of the Portuguese language internationally by Brazil and the role that the CPLP plays in Brazilian diplomacy.
