Abstract

This dissertation stems from an empirical research dedicated to the critical study of female representations and representativeness in Hollywood cinema during the 2010s. The fundamental objective of this investigation is to delve into the analysis of hypotheses that traverse the nuances of the female figure in highly successful films. While its purpose is to establish more concrete parameters on feminist issues, examining the role of women and the resulting feminine norms from an interdisciplinary dialogue that incorporates film studies, cultural criticism, and media analysis. To narrow down this intention, the research will focus on the three highest-grossing films of 2017: "Beauty and the Beast," "Wonder Woman," and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." These films are chosen not only for their commercial success but also as representatives of the studied period throughout the research development, aiming to reflect the prominence of women in Hollywood during the 2010s. The intention is to review the complex layers of female representations and representativity, understanding these productions as significant manifestations of contemporary gender discussions in the industry. By evaluating modern cultural construction and its relationship with the hegemonic entertainment industry, this research aims to unfold various perspectives. In addition to analyzing the development of female characters in these films, it seeks to understand the integration of more women into the cinematic workforce. Thus, the scope of the investigation broadens, tracing a comprehensive view of the cultural and industrial dynamics shaping gender representations in contemporary cinema. The focus is not limited to the screens alone but extends behind the scenes, where creative choices and production decisions play a crucial role in shaping cinematic narratives and promoting diversity of voices within the industry.
