Os capelães da capela de Santa Rita dos presos: reflexões sobre estabilidade e mobilidade social junto ao auxílio de governabilidade à Câmara de Vila Rica (1736-1793)

Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the chaplains and the chaplaincy that took place in the chapel of Santa Rita dos Presos between 1736 and 1793. To this end, we used a set of archives to cross-check data on their insertions in other spaces, which we believe reveals a broad trajectory that is a fundamental part of the criteria by which they were chosen by the City Council to act as chaplains in a chapel under the interlocution of powers: religion and justice. Seeking to observe strategies for mobility and stability, we related their resized trajectories in the chapel through the data available in the Minas Gerais Public Archive, the Journal of the same archive, the Mariana Curia Archive, the Casa dos Contos Archive, Casa do Pilar, as well as general Brotherhood Books, accessing sources of an administrative and/or municipal and ecclesiastical nature, such as: letters, requests, instructions, provisions, inventories and genere et moribus processes. In order to observe the criteria used for the appointment of these individuals, their functions and the link developed with the Vila Rica Town Council itself, we started from the premise that the provision of the office and access to the salary related to it constituted a relational movement in which a certain expectation was placed on both the Town Council and the chaplains.
