As ilustrações de Lourenço Mutarelli como leitura gráfica em A Metamorfose, de Franz Kafka

Abstract

-From the publication in 2019 of A Metamorfose, by Franz Kafka, illustrated by Lourenço Mutarelli, initiating the current master thesis. Although the awakening of concerned dreams of Gregor Samsa morphed into a monstrous insect is a global reach, Lourenço Mutarelli’s illustrations present Kafka’s novella offering a non- included part of the author of Praga, the process of the main character’s metamorphosis. For this purpose, Lourenço Mutarelli’s intentions are analyzed, embracing the feelings and emotions through the corporal language of the images; as well the publisher aim, enjoying the illustrations of what would be a preface, throughout the pages; finally, the relation between the visual representations and the novella A Metamorfose, tracing and weaving the problems faced by the main character Gregor Samsa and his transformation. Therefore, our main goal is analyze the relation text-image of this edition, looking for possible influences through the interpretation and perspective of the text that could result in new relevances for the reading of a classical book, especially as of Jacques Derrida’s idea of supplementation, the reading of Kafka and his texts by Mairowitz and Crumb (2006) and by Malcolm Bradbury (1989), Pisani’s guidance (2012) in terms of Mutarelli’s traces and poetic, Guattari and Deleuze’s analysis related to Kafka’s literary works, Camus’ absurd (2008), Santaella’s semiotic sphere (2012), and Genette’s paratexts (2012). Thus, we have concluded that there is autonomy of illustrations when we think they don’t complement The Metamorphosis, they are Mutarelli’s graphic reading about the process of Gregor’s metamorphosis, resulting in a graphic narrative, until then, unprecedented. Kafka’s work, certainly, is full, however, Mutarelli’s illustrations created an intrinsic bond with the textual narrative, the supplementation of The Metamorphosis.
