Abstract: Cracked tooth (CT) can be defined as a fracture plane of unknown depth and direction, originating from the crown, which can progress to a communication with the pulp and /or periodontal ligament. The aim of the present study was to describe the characteristics of the cases regarding patients diagnosed with CT treated at a private dental clinic. This is a retrospective descriptive study based on the collection and analysis of medical records of patients diagnosed with CT between 2013 and 2018 treated at a private dental clinic located in Governador Valadares - MG. The data were organized in tables using the STATA software, version 10.0. Descriptive analysis was performed from absolute and relative frequencies and bivariate analysis (Chi-square and / or Fischer exact). In total 43 vital teeth with cracks were identified. The prevalent gender was female, aged 51-60 years. Of the 43 teeth diagnosed as CT, 40 were molars (93.0%) and 3 were premolars (7.0%). Among the molars, 30 (69.8%) were located in the lower arch. Ten teeth showed structural impairment of 3 faces (37.0%), 5 of two faces (18.5%), 7 on the distal face (25.9%), 3 on the lingual face (11.1%) and 1 on the vestibular face (3.7%). The pain caused was present in 33.3% of the teeth, followed by spontaneous pain (22.2%), spontaneous and intermittent (18.5%), provoked and spontaneous (11.1%), with severe intensity in 9 teeth (56.2%). Prior knowledge of the characteristics of the CT is extremely important for dentists to be able to make an early diagnosis, avoiding the spread of crack, before the case becomes irreparable.
